At Holly House Dental Practice, we understand that dealing with missing teeth can be a significant concern, impacting not only your oral health but also your confidence and overall well-being. The good news is that there are several effective replacement options available, each with its unique benefits.

Let’s explore these options to help you confidently reclaim a complete and functional smile.

Dental Implants: Dental implants stand out as a permanent and natural-looking solution for replacing missing teeth. They consist of titanium posts surgically implanted into the jawbone, providing a sturdy foundation for artificial teeth. Implants not only look and function like natural teeth but also help prevent bone loss in the jaw, maintaining facial structure.
While the process involves multiple stages, the result is a long-lasting and durable solution that can significantly enhance your quality of life.

Bridges: Dental bridges offer a non-invasive option for replacing missing teeth. They consist of artificial teeth anchored to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. Bridges are a versatile solution that can fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth, restoring both appearance and function.
Our team at Holly House Dental Practice evaluates your oral health to determine if bridges are a suitable option based on your unique needs.

Dentures: For those seeking a more traditional approach, dentures remain a viable option. Modern dentures are crafted to look natural and provide a comfortable fit. Partial dentures replace a few missing teeth, while full dentures are designed for patients with complete tooth loss.
Advances in dental technology have improved the aesthetics and functionality of dentures, ensuring a confident and functional smile.

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. At Holly House Dental Practice, we prioritise personalised care. Consult with our experienced team to determine the most suitable option based on your oral health, preferences, and budget.
We take the time to understand your unique needs, ensuring that your chosen solution aligns with your goals and provides a lasting, confident smile.

Don’t let missing teeth impact your quality of life. Schedule a consultation with us at Holly House Dental Practice, and let’s embark on a journey to complete your smile and restore your confidence. Your radiant, functional smile awaits!

At Holly House Dental Practice, we believe that a healthy smile is a key component of overall well-being. Taking a proactive approach to oral health is the foundation for preventing cavities and gum disease. Here are some personalised tips to help you defend your smile and maintain optimal oral health.

Balanced Diet: Your diet plays a pivotal role in the health of your teeth and gums. At Holly House Dental Practice, we recommend maintaining a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Incorporate foods high in calcium, such as dairy products and leafy greens, to promote strong teeth. Reduce the intake of sugary snacks and beverages, as they contribute to the formation of plaque, a major factor in cavities and gum disease.

Diligent Brushing and Flossing: Brushing and flossing are your first line of defence against oral health issues. Our personalised advice is to brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Ensure you cover all surfaces of your teeth, including the often-neglected tongue side. Don’t forget to floss daily to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth and along the gumline, areas where your toothbrush may not reach effectively.

Antimicrobial Mouthwash: Consider incorporating an antimicrobial mouthwash into your oral care routine. This can help reduce the bacteria that cause plaque and gum disease, providing an extra layer of protection for your smile.
Our team at Holly House Dental Practice can recommend a mouthwash suitable for your specific needs and oral health goals.

Regular Dental Check-Ups: Regular dental check-ups are the cornerstone of preventive care. Our skilled professionals play a crucial role in catching potential issues early, allowing for timely intervention and preventing more significant problems down the road. During your appointments, we conduct thorough examinations, professional cleanings, and offer personalised advice to enhance your oral health.

By following these personalised tips from Holly House Dental Practice, you’re not only defending your smile but also investing in a lifetime of optimal oral health. If you have specific concerns or would like personalised guidance, schedule a visit with us. Let’s work together to ensure your smile remains healthy, radiant, and resilient.

At Holly House Dental Practice, we believe that a bright, white smile can be a powerful confidence booster, contributing to your overall sense of well-being. If you’re considering teeth whitening, we’re here to guide you through the process and help you achieve the radiant smile you deserve.

Exploring teeth whitening options can be an exciting journey, and there are various approaches to consider. While over-the-counter whitening products are readily available, we encourage our patients to explore professional treatments for more effective and longer-lasting results.

Over-the-counter options may provide temporary relief, but they often come with limitations. The concentration of whitening agents in these products is lower compared to what a dental professional can offer. Additionally, the one-size-fits-all approach may not address your unique dental needs and concerns.

Professional teeth whitening at Holly House Dental Practice, on the other hand, is a personalised experience. Our skilled professionals evaluate your dental health and determine the most suitable approach based on your specific needs and preferences. This ensures not only a more effective outcome but also a safer process, minimising the risk of sensitivity or other complications.

During your consultation, we discuss the various whitening treatments available, such as in-office whitening or take-home kits customised to your dental specifications. Our goal is to provide you with a whitening solution that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle while delivering the stunning results you desire.

It’s important to note that the success of any teeth whitening procedure also relies on maintaining good oral hygiene practices. Regular dental cleanings and proper at-home care contribute to the longevity of your brightened smile.

If you’re ready to illuminate your smile and boost your confidence, consult with our team at Holly House Dental Practice. Your journey to a brighter, whiter smile starts with a personalised plan crafted just for you. Let us be your partners in achieving the radiant and confident smile you’ve always wanted.

At Holly House Dental Practice, we understand that tooth sensitivity can be a genuine concern, impacting your enjoyment of everyday activities, especially when savouring hot or cold foods. Fear not; we’re here to guide you through the journey of overcoming tooth sensitivity and reclaiming your pain-free smile.

The first line of defence against sensitivity is choosing the right toothpaste. Our recommendation for sensitive teeth includes toothpaste specifically designed to alleviate discomfort. These toothpaste varieties often contain desensitising agents that work to reduce sensitivity over time. By incorporating this into your daily oral care routine, you’re taking a proactive step towards relief.

Beyond toothpaste, we advise considering the type of toothbrush you use. Opt for a softer toothbrush to minimize enamel erosion during brushing. Gentle, circular brushing techniques are not only effective but also kinder to your tooth enamel and gums. Our team at Holly House Dental Practice is more than happy to provide personalised guidance on selecting the right toothbrush for your unique needs.

If tooth sensitivity persists despite these adjustments, it’s time to consult with our dental professionals. Our experienced team can offer personalised advice tailored to the underlying cause of your sensitivity. In some cases, professional treatments may be recommended, such as desensitising agents or fluoride applications. These targeted interventions aim to address the root cause of sensitivity and provide you with long-lasting relief.

Don’t let tooth sensitivity dictate what you can or cannot enjoy. The experts at Holly House Dental Practice are dedicated to helping you navigate through these concerns. By addressing the issue head-on with the right products and professional guidance, you can once again indulge in your favourite hot and cold treats without hesitation.

Remember, your comfort is our priority. If tooth sensitivity is impacting your daily life, schedule a visit to Holly House Dental Practice, and let’s work together to find the most effective solutions for your unique needs. Your journey to a pain-free smile starts with a personalised plan crafted just for you.

At Holly House Dental Practice, we believe that a radiant smile is a reflection of a healthy mouth, and achieving both starts with a well-rounded approach to oral care. Our team is dedicated to guiding you on the path to optimal oral hygiene, ensuring your smile not only shines but also stays resilient against potential issues.

Begin your journey with the basics: your toothbrush and toothpaste. Opt for a fluoride toothpaste – a mineral known for its enamel-strengthening properties. Our recommendation is to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, employing gentle, circular motions to cover all surfaces of your teeth. This choice is crucial to prevent unnecessary wear on enamel and gum tissue, promoting long-term oral health.

Consistency is key, so make it a habit to brush at least twice a day. This routine, morning and night, helps combat the accumulation of plaque and bacteria, offering lasting benefits to your smile.

While brushing takes care of the surfaces, dental floss becomes your ally against plaque between teeth and along the gumline. We advocate for daily flossing to remove debris that brushing alone may miss, significantly reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

However, even the most diligent home care routine can’t replace the expertise of our dental professionals. Regular visits to Holly House Dental Practice are essential. Our team doesn’t just focus on professional cleanings – we take a comprehensive approach to your oral health.

During your appointments, our skilled professionals not only remove hardened plaque (tartar) that regular brushing and flossing can’t eliminate but also assess your oral health comprehensively. Early detection of potential issues is a hallmark of our care. We identify signs of gum disease, cavities, or even oral cancer in their early stages when intervention is often less invasive and more successful.

Exceptional oral hygiene, as we see it, involves a partnership between you and our dedicated team. By incorporating fluoride toothpaste, gentle brushing, daily flossing, and routine check-ups at Holly House Dental Practice, you’re not just maintaining a radiant smile – you’re investing in your overall health and well-being.

Many people suffer from tooth sensitivity. Read more about it, including symptoms, causes, and treatment down below.

Symptoms

People that have sensitive teeth typically feel pain and discomfort in response to certain triggers. Symptoms can disappear and reappear in time and range from mild to intense. This type of pain is felt at the roots of the affected teeth. The most common triggers are the next ones:

Cold foods and drinks

Cold water, especially during dental cleanings

Cold air

Hot foods and drinks

Acidic foods and drinks

Sweet foods and drinks

Mouth rinses that are alcohol-based

Brushing teeth

Flossing

Causes

Some people have more sensitive teeth because their teeth have thinner enamel. In many cases, the enamel can be damaged if you:

Consume acidic foods or drinks on a regular basis

Grind your teeth

Use a hard toothbrush

Brush your teeth too aggressively

There are other conditions which can cause tooth sensitivity, as well. For example, Gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), makes acid come up from the stomach and oesophagus and damages teeth in time. Conditions that cause frequent vomiting, such as bulimia. also lead to acid wearing down the enamel.

Another example is gum recession, which can leave tooth sections unprotected, leading to sensitivity. Broken and chipped teeth, damaged fillings and crowns, and tooth decay may leave the tooth’s dentin exposed, causing sensitivity, as well. In this case, sensitivity is felt only in one tooth or mouth region.

Treatment

If your tooth sensitivity is mild, you may try various dental treatments that you can buy in pharmacies. Choose toothpaste for sensitive teeth because they don’t have irritating ingredients and might even contain desensitising ingredients, which help to get rid of any discomfort. Regarding mouthwash, pick an alcohol-free one, as it’s less irritating. Using softer toothbrushes and brushing more gently will also help with teeth sensitivity. In general, it takes time for remedies to work, but you’ll definitely see an improvement in the first week of starting the treatment. If these treatments aren’t efficient for you, talk to your dentist and get a prescription for toothpaste and mouthwash.

We understand that visiting the dentist may be an uncomfortable or even a scary experience for some. We know it’s tempting to skip your scheduled appointment due to nerves, but we advise that you don’t! There are many reasons why attending your regular check-up appointment is important.

Skipping your appointment is only a temporary solution to nerves, facing your uncomfortability is the key to getting over your fear, and receiving excellent dental care definitely helps too.

Here are 3 top reasons why you shouldn’t miss your dental check-up appointment.

Check-ups Can Prevent Issues

Many common dental problems can be easily prevented with maintaining good oral hygiene. Since problems such as gum disease and tooth decay are primarily caused by a buildup of plaque and tartar, proper cleaning can get rid of this and therefore prevent these problems from happening.

A dentist can not only spot these issues and advise you on what to do, they can clean and polish your teeth to remove any buildup and keep your gums and teeth as healthy as possible. This is why regular check-ups are important, you’ll be able to take preventative measures before any real problems begin!

Get Professional Advice

Skipping your dental check-up means you’ll be missing out on any professional advice your dentist may have to give you. You may benefit from switching to a certain toothpaste, flossing more often, or using another oral hygiene product that you wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. Your dentist knows from examining your teeth and gums what they would benefit the most from, so it’s important to attend your check-ups so you can get this valuable information.

Missing Out on Thorough Cleaning

When you visit the dentist, they may clean and polish your teeth as part of your checkup. This doesn’t hurt at all and is very beneficial to your oral health. This treatment will remove any buildup of plaque and tartar off your teeth, reducing your risk of periodontal (gum) disease. This type of thorough cleaning can only be done at the dentist, so it’s best not to skip your check-up or you may be missing out on this treatment.

Remember, it’s Only a Check-up

A lot of people who are afraid of the dentist (we’re nice I promise!) may skip their appointments because they are scared of having dental treatment. But it’s important to remember that a checkup is only an examination of your mouth, there will be nothing done at this appointment.

If at your check-up your dentist recommends some dental work such as a filling, this will be done at a later date with your consent. We highly recommend you attend your dental treatment appointments too as they will help to save your teeth from gum disease and tooth decay, and other unpleasant outcomes.

It’s no secret that pregnancy brings a lot of change to a woman’s life. Getting used to the change in hormones, eating habits, and shape of your body is all part of the journey.

Now that you’re pregnant, you may have an influx of new concerns and worries that you didn’t have to think about before! One of these concerns could be about the safety of dentist visits. Our team at Holly House is here to help you navigate your visit with us whilst you’re pregnant.

Attending Your Check-ups

Visiting the dentist whilst pregnant is not only safe, but it’s also more important than ever to do so! Attending your check-ups allows you to maintain healthy gums and teeth and prevent common dental problems. The last thing you need when you’re pregnant is to have any unnecessary stress.

Did you know that the rise in hormones caused by pregnancy can temporarily loosen the tissue surrounding the teeth? This sounds alarming but it usually doesn’t result in tooth loss so don’t worry. It’s important to chat to your dentist about these concerns so they can offer their expert advice.

Pregnancy hormones can also increase your risk of periodontal disease, so it’s more important than ever for you to keep up with your oral hygiene and visit your dentist. Periodontal disease, or commonly known as gum disease, can be prevented by proper oral hygiene. This includes: brushing twice a day, using mouthwash, and flossing.

Important Things To Remember

Here are the key things to remember when visiting the dentist whilst you’re pregnant.

Dental work is safe during pregnancy. Just make sure you let your dentist know that you’re pregnant and which trimester you’re in and it will work out just fine.

Most dental treatments can be carried out like normal during pregnancy. There are some minor exceptions to this, for example, tooth extractions should be done during the second or third trimester to avoid any unnecessary risks. Fillings should also be discussed beforehand.

Pregnant women are entitled to free NHS dental care. During your pregnancy and up to 12 months after your baby is born, you can receive free dental care. This is due to the increased risk that pregnant people face.

Tell your dentist what medications you’re on. As a pregnant woman, you’re more likely to take medication to treat the changes your body is going through. If you take Heparin for example it’s important to let your dentist know so they’re aware.

If you’re pregnant and worried about your dental health then contact our team today to get the help and support you need. Our friendly team is here to help you get the necessary treatment.

If you are still unsure or need further medical advice we would always recommend speaking with your GP.

If you thought that mouthwash was just useful for helping to give you fresh, clean smelling breath, then unfortunately you are underestimating its capabilities. Mouthwash can, in fact, form a vital part of your oral hygiene routine, and can help to keep your gums and teeth healthy.

What is mouthwash used for?

First of all, it is important to note that mouthwash is not a substitute for those other important parts of your oral hygiene routine, namely regular brushing and flossing. Mouthwash is very good when it comes to killing any bacteria in your mouth. It can help prevent gum disease and also strengthen your teeth. Using mouthwash is an additional protection that will actively work to remove any of the residual bacteria that might be left behind following brushing, and this is why your hygienist may recommend it.

How should you use mouthwash?

If you are going to use mouthwash as part of your oral hygiene routine, it is important to make sure you are doing it properly.

Make sure that you use the correct amount of mouthwash as indicated on your mouthwash bottle. Pour it into a clean cup. Some mouthwashes can be used as they are, others need diluting – check the bottle and follow this instruction carefully, do not dilute more than is recommended as this will weaken the efficiency of the mouthwash. Use all the mouthwash, swish it around your mouth vigorously and ensure that you do this for at least 30 seconds – time this if necessary. It is really important to make sure that you spit out all the mouthwash and do not swallow it.

Additional tips

Wait a minimum of 30 minutes after brushing before using mouthwash – using it too early will not give your mouth the most protection from the fluoride in your toothpaste.

Rinse after flossing – this is a great way of swilling out anything that you have loosened during flossing.

Mouthwash can be used after meals when brushing isn’t possible.

Which mouthwash is best for daily cleaning?

There are a range of different mouthwash products available, and it can be hard to know which one might be most appropriate. For most people, a mouthwash that contains fluoride will be the most appropriate one and provide the necessary benefits. Other mouthwashes are more appropriate for people with certain needs – if you are unsure which is the most appropriate mouthwash for you, your dental hygienist here at Holly House Dental Practice will be more than happy to suggest one. Why not get in touch to book your appointment?

A large number of people in the UK suffer from periodontal disease, which is also known as gum disease. This is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. Many of these people end up suffering from periodontal disease because they have bad flossing or poor brushing habits. This allows sticky bacteria, known as plaque, to form on your teeth. This builds up and hardens, and it can eventually result in tooth loss.
If your gums are sore, red, and swollen, there is a high chance that you have periodontal disease. The same applies if your gums bleed whenever you floss, brush your teeth, or eat hard foods, such as apples.
If you suspect that you have gum disease, the best thing to do is book an appointment with your dentist. After all, gum disease can result in tooth loss if you do not get it treated. It can also cause your gums to shrink and for you to have bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth. This is why it is better to see a dentist sooner rather than later so that they can get you on the right treatment path.

What treatment options are there for periodontal disease?

Your dentist will be able to assess your gums and advise on the best course of action. If you have caught the gum disease early enough, they may simply clean your teeth professionally for you and give you some advice on how to maintain good oral health habits at home.
However, if you have advanced periodontal disease, surgical treatments may be required. Examples here include bone grafting, soft tissue grafts, flap surgery (also known as pocket reduction surgery), tissue-stimulating proteins, and guided tissue regeneration.
It is worth pointing out that surgery will only be required as a last resort. There are a number of different treatments and techniques that dentists will try before they resort to surgery. For example, you may be given a course of antibiotics to try first.

Contact us today if you suspect you have periodontal disease
If you are worried that you may have periodontal disease, please get in touch with the team today for more information. We have a kind and caring team that will put you at ease and make sure you get the treatment you need, setting you on the path to a healthier mouth.
